Gerrard studied Visual Art at Newcastle University (Australia), majoring in painting. He also studied sculpture, photography, printmaking and ceramics.

In his mid-twenties, he came to London for three years and studied Corporal Mime at the Animate Theatre School of Dramatic Corporal Mime. On returning to Australia, he taught Drama at the Department of Education, Newcastle University and also gained the Graduate Diploma in Education, majoring in Art and Drama. His experience as a performing artist has influenced how he portrays figures and movement in his artworks.

He has explored many styles and art mediums as an artist and art teacher.

Throughout his career, he has kept an artist journal containing observations, sketches and creative ideas to use for major artworks. These sketchbooks are full of small drawings of landscapes, portraits and still-life from the places visited and more creative imaginative imagery.

Gerrard has turned to printmaking to develop and present these sketches along with more recent local observations.
